An Unmarried Hermes Heir Is Leaving His Massive Fortune to His Gardener
Wealth is usually transferred in a predictable way, especially within old European dynasties. You expect it to stay in the bloodline or vanish into a massive charitable foundation. But Nicolas Puech, a fifth-generation descendant of the Hermès founder, decided to go off-script.
The man who owns a massive chunk of the brand famous for silk scarves and Birkin bags decided his legacy belonged to the person who looked after his grounds.
The Billionaire Behind The Headlines
Nicolas Puech has always been an outlier. While the rest of the Hermès clan banded together years ago to protect the company from corporate takeovers, Puech mostly kept to himself. While living in Switzerland, he led a life of wealth beyond imagination but maintained a relatively low public profile.
He never married or had children, which left a multi-billion-dollar question mark hanging over his estate. For years, the plan was for his 5.7% stake in the company, valued at over $12 billion, to fund his own Isocrates Foundation.
An Unexpected Heir

The story changed when news broke that Puech was moving to adopt his gardener. The gardener is a man from a modest Moroccan background, and Puech is reported to have had a long-standing personal and professional relationship with him.
Puech explored legal options, including adoption, which could affect the distribution of his estate under Swiss inheritance law. He had already gifted the gardener’s family expensive properties in Marrakesh and Montreux.
A Fortune That May Not Be There

Just as the world was processing the idea of a gardener becoming one of the richest people on earth, the narrative took a sharp turn. Puech filed a lawsuit alleging that his fortune had essentially vanished.
He claimed he no longer had access to a significant portion of his Hermès shares, accusing his former wealth manager of years of manipulation. It was a staggering pivot. His plans to transfer wealth became complicated after he alleged that his shares had disappeared or been mismanaged.
Where The Story Stands Now
The legal system hasn’t been particularly sympathetic to Puech’s claims of foul play. A Swiss court recently dismissed his case, noting that he had handed over control of his finances years ago and there was no clear evidence of fraud. This leaves the situation in a strange limbo.
We have a gardener who is technically the heir to a historic fortune, and an aging heir who claims that fortune has been stolen. Whether the money is truly gone or just buried in complex paperwork remains a mystery.
