This year’s Met Gala event (aka the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute benefit) was scheduled for May 4, 2020, but it was canceled like many other 2020 events. The annual red carpet affair that raises money for the museum’s fashion department was meant to coincide with the spring exhibition, “About Time: Fashion and Duration,” a journey through the history of fashion from 1870 to today.
Here, we take a look at the 2019 event to get our fashion fix. About 550 people attended the black-tie event on May 6, 2019. The event’s elaborate red carpet was just as star-studded as the Oscars, starting with the hosts: Anna Wintour, editor-in-chief of Vogue; Alessandro Michele, the creative director of Gucci; Pop Star Harry Styles and none other than Lady Gaga and Serena Williams. Invite-only attendees showed up in their best outfits dedicated to the 2019 theme — Camp: Notes on Fashion.
No, we’re not talking about summer camp, where kids go every year to learn how to canoe and capture lighting bugs. The theme was broad in that it referred to a style of personal or creative expression that was exaggerated. But, wait, isn’t that already what the Met Gala is about? Yes, it is, but attendees really took it up a notch. These were the best looks that celebrities brought to the pink, yes pink, carpet.
