Overwhelmed by the number of sight words there are to teach? We broke them into 10 levels to make it easier. Work on one list every week. Once they’ve learned them all, they’ll be in amazing shape to elevate their reading fluency.
Why? Because sight words make up 75 percent of the words used in most early children’s literature. If they get the hang of these, they’ll be able to read independently with much more confidence. The more confident they are, the more likely they’ll be to become avid readers.
To teach sight words, try the following:
- Make flashcards together and practice them for a few minutes each day. Small rewards can be used as an incentive.
- Make flashcard signs to hang on the fridge or around the house. Both making the signs and seeing them frequently will help engrain them in your kiddo’s brain.
- Practice looking for sight words in books you read together.
- Try sight word apps, like Reading Eggs or ABC Mouse. The gamified learning experience is a hit with most kids.
