These Famous Interracial Celebrity Couples Inspire Diversity

June is the perfect month to celebrate diversity and inclusion, especially through the lens of interracial celebrity couples. After all, Loving Day is June 12, marking the anniversary of the 1967 Supreme Court decision that struck down remaining state laws that stood in the way of mixed-race couples being together. Diversity should be celebrated all year round, however, and a lot has changed since this momentous occasion.
At that time, interracial marriages only made up 3 percent of new marriages in the U.S., but that number increased sixfold to 18.6 percent in 2022, according to U.S. Census Bureau statistics, with an additional 28.6 percent of unmarried households being mixed race. Needless to say, the future of relationships will only continue to get more diverse. Here are some of our favorite interracial celebrity couples who celebrate and inspire diversity.
Zoe Saldana and Marco Perego

Year Married: 2013
Children Together: 3
Actress Zoe Saldana and artist Marco Perego tied the knot in a secret wedding very soon after they started dating.
The best part? He took her last name.
On Marriage…

“What was important for my mother is that we married somebody who still had dreams and aspirations — not what color or class they were from,” Saldana told InStyle.
Ellen Pompeo and Chris Ivery

Year Married: 2007
Children Together: 3
We love this: Actress Ellen Pompeo met Chris Ivery at a Los Angeles grocery store in 2003. They were friends for the first six months of their relationship before they began dating, and the rest is history.
The two tied the knot at city hall in New York, with Mayor Michael Bloomberg as the officiant.
On People of Color…

“People of color are magical, mystical, powerful, beautiful, spiritual, strong and excellent at what they do,” Pompeo shared on Red Table Talk. “There’s just so much power and talent. The Black experience is a powerful one, and I can see where that would be intimidating. It’s so much easier to just celebrate it and just thank the universe for giving us people of color because it’s a gift.”
