Matching family Halloween costumes is the stuff of magic. Whether you want to go for the traditional group theme (think cops and robbers) or something that references pop culture (“Schitt’s Creek,” anyone?), we have some excellent family Halloween costume ideas for you.
The only thing left to decide is who gets the candy at the end of Halloween night.
Astronauts and the Solar System
This group Halloween costume is totally out of this world. The solar system outfit is an epic DIY project, but you can put together a space-themed family costume without going all out.

Your Last Subway Sandwich Order
It takes two sandwich artists to make this kind of sub. Tracking down Subway sandwich baby costumes was tough, but we succeeded. If it happens to go out of stock, just check on eBay or Etsy, and you might luck out.

The Cast of ‘Tiger King’
“Tiger King” was a 2020 craze, but the family costume version remains amusing.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Oompa Loompa Included
We highly recommend trying this family costume before your kids are old enough to take offense to being dressed up as one of the naughty kids from the movie. The costume doesn’t have the same effect without a nap-deprived Veruca Salt.

Cops and Robbers
Whether parents are the cops or the robbers is totally your prerogative. We’d take off our bad cop outfit for a night and let the kids pretend to be the bosses for once. Until the trick-or-treating candy comes out, at least.

This family costume will never not be a winner. As long as you go with high-quality costumes, you’re almost guaranteed to win the prize for best group costume.

Charlie Brown and the Great Pumpkin
Charlie Brown is the only legit costume in the mix, but it’s not hard to find a Lucy look-alike costume. For dad’s part, a striped shirt and a blanket will give him the Linus look in minutes. Supplying your own Snoopy is highly recommended.

‘Toy Story’ Characters
“Toy Story” is a fun family costume idea because it appeals to multiple generations. Parents grew up with the original Pixar film, while the next generation just saw “Toy Story 4.” At this point, it’s a tradition. A really, really cute one.

A Spin on a Classic Costume From ‘Up’
There are so many ways to play this one depending on how many people are in your family. Most “Up” family costumes will require a bit of DIY skills, like if you want to design the entire house or a convincing snipe costume. In a pinch, just dressing up as Russell and Mr. Fredricksen with plenty of brightly colored balloons will do.

Mary Poppins, Bert and a Precious Penguin
Seriously, why didn’t we think of this? Mary Poppins and Bert make a whimsical couples costume. (Did those two actually get together? If they didn’t, they should have.) Just add on an unlimited number of penguins, and this year’s costume contest is in the bag.

Two Big Bad Wolves and Three Little Pigs
It doesn’t really make sense for only one big, bad wolf to exist. Wolves live in packs, so there must be at least two. Why you’d want to eat your own children, we have no idea, but we’ll let it slide on Halloween.

The Cast of ‘Schitt’s Creek’
Elementary schoolers won’t be amused by a “Schitt’s Creek” family costume, but if you have teens who love the show or toddlers who couldn’t care less about Halloween, we think this is a fabulous idea. It hasn’t been overdone, all the characters stand out, and you’ll have plenty of opportunities to let an, “Ew, David” slip.

Emojis
There’s plenty of room for creativity with this one. Think of all the emoji options out there. To keep it simple, let the kids be traditional smiley faces, while parents rock the happy poop and dancing woman emoji ensemble.

Coraline and Other Mother
For a mother-daughter costume, it doesn’t get any cooler (or creepier) than Coraline and Other Mother. Just make sure your daughter is old enough to not get spooked by the creepy button eyes of Other Mother. We’re grownups, and we’d still jump out the window if we ran into Other Mother in the hall at night.

Ketchup, Mustard and a Baby Hot Dog
A hot dog without ketchup and mustard wouldn’t be the same. If you have a fur baby, this family costume also works with a dog costume.

Now, here’s a truly unique family costume idea. Each family member gets a look all their own, and when you put them all together … chef’s kiss.

Circus Performers
For bigger families, we adore this idea. Two ring masters lead the show, while a little strongman and circus animals complete the ensemble. Don’t worry: It’s way more ethical that an actual circus.
