Leave it to TikTok to completely change how we see cheese and charcuterie boards. TikTok user Justine Doiron posted about the butter board on Sept. 15, 2022, and the video has already gotten 8 million views.
As with every other viral trend on TikTok, several foodies quickly followed suit, posting their own versions of this shareable treat.
What Is a Butter Board?
Simply put, a butter board is exactly what it sounds like. You spread softened butter on a wooden cutting board and top it with delicious ingredients that pair well with the butter in question. For something savory, think cheeses, salts and charcuterie meats. For something sweet, hot honey, fig jam and assorted fruits will do the trick.
Doiron credits cookbook author Joshua McFadden for the idea, but she’s the one that brought the food trend to the social media masses.
How to Make a Butter Board
So, the beauty of the butter board is that it’s easy to make and can be as simple or complex as you like. For beginner butter boarders (yes, we’re making that a thing), a delicious butter with some coarse sea salt and herbs is all you need.
But some people are getting seriously creative, with colorful edible flowers and fruits to make it a delight for all senses. Of course, there are also different kinds of salted butter — we’re thinking truffle or roasted garlic butter — that can be used. Some people are even using other spreads, like cream cheese, nut butters and the like.
The one thing that all butter boards have in common, though? A delicious, warm bread to dig into the spread. Read on to see what we’re talking about.
