Few high schools in the country can be presented with as much grandeur as Reading Senior High School, which is better known as “The Castle on the Hill” to the residents of Reading, Pennsylvania.

Reading towers over the entire town and really does look like a castle pulled out of “Game of Thrones” or some other piece of fantasy/sci-fi.

The school’s Latin motto is also very cool: “Tell me why you are here.”

Lenny Moore was one of the great offensive weapons in NFL history, and his football fame started at Reading Senior High, where he earned the nicknames “Sputnik” and “The Reading Rocket” for his elite speed.

Moore went on to star for Penn State, then in the NFL for the Baltimore Colts, where he was a two-time NFL champion. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1975.

One of the greatest football players of all time, Walter Payton starred at Columbia High School, Jackson State, then in the NFL for the Chicago Bears, where he retired as the NFL career rushing leader in 1987.

Payton, who was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1993, died of bile duct cancer in 1999, at just 45 years old.

Within a decade, Scherzinger shot to international fame as the lead singer of the girl group Pussycat Dolls when their debut album “PCD” sold over 4.5 million albums worldwide.

Scherzinger had a No. 1 single as a solo artist with “Don’t Hold Your Breath” in 2011.

Milton High’s Dexter Fowler turned his back on a scholarship offer from the University of Miami to play professional baseball, where he’s been an outfielder in the majors since 2008.

Fowler had his best season in 2016 with the St. Louis Cardinals, when he made his only All-Star appearance and led the franchise to a World Series championship.

Springfield Central opened its doors in 1894 at a then-whopping cost of $100,000, the equivalent to an estimated $10 million in today’s money.

One of the more distinct features on campus is the Jim Ball Gymnasium, with unique sunken floors for basketball and volleyball.

We don’t need to spend much time introducing Springfield Central High alum Bob Barker.

The retired legend can hang “Greatest Game Show Host of All Time” next to his name for his time on “The Price Is Right” from 1972 to 2007, when it became the longest-running game show in North American television history.

Barker didn’t just graduate from high school in Springfield, but also from college at nearby Drury University, where he was on a basketball scholarship.

The school’s 40 acres are on land purchased for approximately $58,000 in 1954. It was an amazing purchase, considering that converts to about $600,000 today.

Erik Kratz was the definition of a journeyman catcher, spending seven seasons in the minor leagues before catching on in the majors in 2010, where he played for 12 teams over the next 10 seasons.

Charles Randolph-Wright graduated from York High before he went on to Duke University, where he studied with the Royal Shakespeare Company while earning his undergraduate degree.

Randolph-Wright’s first Broadway credit was as a cast member of “Showgirls,” but he found his real lane as a director, where he’s helmed “Motown: The Musical” based on Motown founder Berry Gordy’s book. It was the first show in a jam-packed decade of directing broadway hits.

Randolph-Wright teamed with Oprah Winfrey to produce a television series, “Delilah,” and has also directed episodes of the hit series “Greenleaf” on the Oprah Winfrey Network.

The film was based on Stevenson’s memoir “Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption” in which he told the story of his journey to overturning the wrongful conviction and death sentence of Walter McMillan, who is portrayed by Oscar winner Jamie Foxx in the film.

Fayetteville High’s history is the same as the American story. The school is located adjacent to the Trail of Tears historical trail and was also the first high school in Arkansas to voluntarily desegregate in 1954 when Black students began enrolling.

Fayetteville High, for as old as it is, has a distinctly modern feel thanks to massive renovations over the last 20 years. Plenty of glass and steel give it a vibe that falls in line with some of the modern West Coast schools.

Fayetteville High’s Ronnie Brewer was a Parade All-American in high school before he became a two-time All-SEC selection at the University of Arkansas.

Brewer, a 6-foot-7 shooting guard/small forward, was the No. 14 overall pick by the Utah Jazz in the 2006 NBA draft and played eight seasons in the league.

Bear Creek High School first opened its doors in some form in 1894, and its original structure lasted until 1959, when it was destroyed by a fire.

Its current structure, with a make-you-gasp mountain backdrop, opened in 2009 but almost never came to be. The gymnasium and several other buildings were heavily damaged by a fire determined to be arson committed by two Bear Creek students during construction in 2008.

Does the Jefferson County School District have a unique history of fires? Just one year before the 2008 fire, another fire at nearby Weber Elementary School that was determined to be arson caused $65 million in damages.

Carey Lowell graduated from Bear Creek High and spent one year at the University of Colorado before she dropped out to pursue a modeling career in New York City, where she went to work for elite clients like Ralph Lauren and Calvin Klein.

Lowell made the move to acting and scored a big-time role as a Bond Girl in the 1986 film “License to Kill” with Timothy Dalton’s version of James Bond.

Lowell, who was married to film star Richard Gere from 2002 to 2016, also had a recurring role on the TV series “Law & Order” along with one of its spinoffs.

David Fincher is one of the greatest directors of all time, and the auteur behind groundbreaking films and television shows that have helped define pop culture.

Fincher, a three-time Academy Award nominee for best director, started his career creating special effects for “The Empire Strikes Back” and “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom” while working for Industrial Light & Magic.

He gained worldwide fame as the director of “Se7en” in 1995, followed by “Fight Club” in 1999, thriller “Zodiac” and arguably his best film, “The Social Network,” in 2010. More recently, he’s been the architect behind Netflix shows “House of Cards” and “Mindhunter.”

Kendrick’s career hit another level when she starred opposite George Clooney in the 2009 film “Up in the Air” and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, but the movie she’s most known for is “Pitch Perfect.” The 2017 film grossed $115 million at the U.S. box office on a budget of just $17 million.

Straub, 6-foot-3 and 180 pounds, made three appearances in his abbreviated first season and should be one of the best pitchers in the MAC before his college career is over.

Chandler High product Cameron Jordan has been one of the most dominant defensive players in the NFL over the last decade.

In a cool twist, both Cameron Jordan and his father, former NFL tight end Steve Jordan, both have six Pro Bowl selections, but Cameron does have the upper hand in postseason honors. He’s also a three-time NFL All-Pro and was named to the NFL’s All-Decade Team for the 2010s.

Cameron Jordan isn’t the only big-time NFL player to come out of Chandler High either.

Boise High School is a medley of architectural styles — an aesthetic built more out of necessity than trying to fit into one particular designer’s box. Buildings that make up the school include ones from 1908 mixed with ones built all the way through the 1960s.

Boise’s natural beauty combines with that mix of architecture styles to create a truly unique campus — an entrance with big columns done in the neoclassical style give way to Art Deco style in seamless fashion.

Boise High grad Judy Lynn was a staple on the Las Vegas strip in the 1950s and 1960s with her country music act, which she maneuvered while also putting out 14 albums in the 1960s and early 1970s.

Lynn got her big break when she was named Miss Idaho in 1955, then was hired to go on a nationwide tour with Grand Ole Opry performers. That turned into a starring role on Broadway in the musical “Top Banana” and then a longstanding gig in Vegas.

It’s a shame the state of Massachusetts is working on five years of denying upgrades to Monument Mountain Regional High School. It seems the powers that be would be happy to embrace such a beautiful mix of architecture and education instead of turn its back on it.

No amount of politicking could take away from the inherent beauty that lies in the lush, rolling hills around Monument Mountain — it seems more like Vermont than Great Barrington.

Hopefully, the state will kick in with some funds for the kids … and remember it’s about the kids when they do it. Do better, Massachusetts!

Monument Mountain Regional High School Notable Alumni: W.E.B. Du Bois

W.E.B. Du Bois was one of the great thinkers of the 20th century, the first Black person in the United States to earn a doctorate and a prolific writer who fought tooth-and-nail against racism.

Du Bois actually graduated from Searles High School, which combined with Williams High School in nearby Stockbridge, Massachusetts, to form Monument Mountain High in Great Barrington.

You can find plenty of jokes on Twitter comparing American Canyon High School to one of the most famous fictional schools of all time — Hogwarts Academy from the Harry Potter series of books and movies.

And that’s fitting, because American Canyon’s campus really does seem like a magical place. Located in the middle of Napa Valley and opened in 2010, it’s one of the better modern campuses we’ve ever seen.

American Canyon High is one of the newest schools on the list after opening in 2010, and in football-crazy California, it’s no surprise the school’s most notable alumni (so far) is former University of Oregon and Portland State defensive back Chris Seisay.

Most notably, Seisay started for Oregon in the College Football Playoff semifinal win over Oregon and the CFP Championship Game loss to Ohio State in 2014.

Starting in 2016, the school began construction on an expanded cafeteria area and a two-story theater.

For a school that’s barely 20 years old, Windermere Prep has a notable alum in up-and-coming IndyCar driver Spencer Pigot, who is just 27 years old and has been on the IndyCar Series tour for the last three years.

Pigot was a star on the kart racing series when he was in high school and made the leap to pro racing not long after he graduated in 2011. He’s raced in the Indy 500 the last five years, with a career-best 14th place finish in 2019.

Since the school was first built, six additional buildings have been added onto City High, which also has some of the best high school journalism programs in the country.

Academy of the Sacred Heart Notable Alumni: Cokie Roberts

Cokie Roberts was one of the most well-known and influential journalists of the 1980s and 1990s working for NPR first, then ABC News.

She won the Edward R. Murrow Award and an Emmy Award in 1991.

Grosse Pointe South grad Edward Herrmann was a fantastic character actor for decades but is most well known for his role as the video-store owning vampire Max in the 1987 Joel Schumacher film “The Lost Boys.”

Kodiak High’s facelift to a modern, sleek marvel was completed when the school expanded in 2015. Glass, steel and wood on the front-facing entrance welcome students, and inside it’s an array of interactive classrooms and commons areas.

The school’s expansion didn’t come cheap. It was completed at a price tag of approximately $81 million.

It’s not totally clear if Darby Stanchfield graduated from Kodiak High before her family moved to the Pacific Northwest, but it’s slim pickings with well-known alums so she gets the nod.

There might not be a more amazing place to experience high school life in the entire country than The International Preparatory School on Buffalo’s west side, where the student body speaks up to 40 different languages.

We’re a sucker for lawns and big, ominous structures. This one is made all the more pleasing to the eye with a sharp, brick-and-white-paint building surrounding a sleek, slim tower in the middle.

While TIPS has been the sole occupant for less than a decade, the building spent most of its life as Grover Cleveland High School, which once housed TIPS as a “school within a school” and closed in 2011.

The International Preparatory School Notable Alumni: Steven Means

Atlanta Falcons defensive end Steven Means actually graduated from The International Preparatory School when it was still called Grover Cleveland High School.

He played for the University of Buffalo and has been in the NFL since 2013.

One of the great things about nice high school campuses is the different kinds of amazing architecture we get to experience on our virtual tour. In this case, it’s Spanish Revival style at Murphy High School in Mobile.

Architecture often doesn’t really hold up over the years because it tries too hard to get in line with modern ideas of style. The builders of Murphy High did such a great job in their construction that this was never a problem.

In another testament to what the school has meant to Mobile over the years, after it was severely damaged in a tornado in 2012, it was rebuilt while retaining much of the old aesthetic.

Murphy High School Notable Alumni: Keith McCants

Murphy High’s Keith McCants was the No. 4 overall pick in the 1990 NFL draft out of the University of Alabama and played six seasons in the NFL.

McCants was profiled on the ESPN “30 for 30” episode “Broke,” which set an all-time ESPN record for viewership.

Santa Catalina School Notable Alumni: Patty Hearst

Santa Catalina’s famous graduates have a dark legacy.

Newspaper heiress Patty Hearst was sentenced to 35 years in prison for her role robbing banks with the Symbionese Liberation Army. She later had her sentence commuted by President Jimmy Carter after seven years, then was granted a pardon by President Bill Clinton.

Another Santa Catalina grad, Abigail Folger, was one of the people murdered by members of the Manson family in Los Angeles in 1969.

“The Lady on the Hill” was built in 1916 in the Neoclassical style and overlooks the thing that makes Texans’ hearts full more than anything else — a high school football field that was the first concrete stadium built in the U.S. and the original home of the Sun Bowl.

El Paso High School Notable Alumni: F. Murray Abraham

The striking thing about the front-facing entrance to the school is a massive, rust-colored obelisk that welcomes students and visitors. Beyond that, there are modern, earth-toned, glass-dominant buildings dotting the campus that push the futuristic vibe.

The design for the school was never with a school in mind, which seems to speak directly to its beauty. In its first life, the Castilian-style buildings were the San Jose Hotel in the roaring 1920s.

One big part of The Bolles School’s appeal is its athletics programs and facilities, with a who’s who of pro athlete alumni spread across the NFL, NBA and MLB.

Students walking up to Withrow High every day are truly fortunate. They cross a unique, arching entry bridge in the shadow of an epic clock tower above an entrance framed by large Roman columns.

The school has undergone big-scale renovations over the last two decades to modernize the campus, thanks in large part to gifts from the NFL’s Cincinnati Bengals.

Mission High butts right up to Dolores Park, where locals gather on the weekends to picnic in the grass and simultaneously take in stunning views of the San Francisco skyline.

The oldest still-standing high school in San Francisco has amazing architecture, and you can’t help but wonder if designs of an older age might be something we should gravitate back to, including a magnificent, 1,750-seat theater.

In an interesting twist, the creator of the television show “Friday Night Lights,” considered by some to be the greatest depiction of high school life in any medium, is Taft alum Peter Berg.

The North Shore suburb of Chicago’s signature high school looks pulled from a John Hughes movie, and one of its most amazing features is its huge front lawn, where students play lacrosse and field hockey.

In the spring and summer, vines come to life on the school’s front-facing entrance, further enhancing the movie-like atmosphere around the campus.

The movie references are fitting. The 1981 Academy Award for Best Picture winner “Ordinary People” was filmed in and around the campus, and movie star Vince Vaugh is perhaps Lake Forest’s most famous graduate.

Daniel Inouye was a U.S. Senator from 1963 through his death in 2012 at 88 years old.

Inouye fought in World War II, where he was awarded the Medal of Honor after he lost his right arm to a grenade blast.

Inouye was also the first Japanese-American to serve in the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate.

Located smack dab on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean, you can watch the waves roll in from almost anywhere on campus. Can you imagine what that’s like in the spring?

The school has been home to some of the most wealthy and well-known families in the United States over the years, including several members of the Bush family, and made its way into the F. Scott Fitzgerald novel “This Side of Paradise” in 1920.

Of all the “new” schools on this list, none have pulled off as groundbreaking a design as Diamond Ranch High School, which was built on what was previously thought to be unusable land on a hillside between Diamond Ranch and Pomona.

The expressionist modern design of the school is truly breathtaking, and the work by architect Thom Mayne is still being poured over 20 years after the school opened.

One indication of the school’s unique beauty is in its draw from Hollywood, where it’s been featured in films like “The Cell” starring Jennifer Lopez, “Orange County” starring Jack Black, and “Live Free or Die Hard” starring Bruce Willis.

Diamond Ranch High School Notable Alumni: Charles Brown
