9-Year-Old Caught Skipping School on Live TV at Football Match
A nine-year-old Newcastle United supporter expected an ordinary school day in January 2025. Instead, he found himself at the center of a national moment. During a major cup match, broadcast cameras caught him in the stands, celebrating with the kind of joy only football can bring.
By the time the final whistle blew, his reaction had taken on a life of its own. Clips spread across social media within hours, and by the next morning, the moment that thrilled him in the stadium had reached his classroom too.
The Night At The Emirates Stadium
The incident took place on January 7, 2025, during the Carabao Cup semi-final first leg between Newcastle United and Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium in London. Newcastle won 2–0.
During celebrations after Anthony Gordon scored, cameras scanned the crowd and captured the young Newcastle supporter reacting with excitement. The boy was later identified as Sammy Scott from North Tyneside, who attended the match with his father, Mark.
They did not realize they had appeared on television until friends started messaging them after the match. Broadcast stills and video clips then spread quickly across sports media and social platforms.
The School Absence Issue
Sammy had missed school that day after his mother informed staff he was unwell. After media footage showed him attending the match, Benton Dene Primary School contacted the family and confirmed the absence would be recorded as unauthorized.
Reports later indicated that the situation remained low-key, and no major penalties were publicly reported. Sammy reportedly has strong overall attendance at school and plays football regularly for a local youth team.
Sammy’s father later said the trip was planned as a special football experience. The family had previously missed chances to attend major matches, and this semi-final was important to them.
They were seated close to the pitch, which increased the chance of appearing on broadcast coverage. Mark later said the amount of attention the clip received surprised the family.

The moment generated strong reactions online. Many football fans supported the boy and described the match as the kind of experience many young supporters dream about.
Former England striker Peter Crouch publicly supported the boy, saying people should cut him some slack. Newcastle’s win was already a major result for supporters. For one young fan in the crowd, the match became much more. The clip remains part of online football highlights from that cup run.
